In the state board, balancing is often about showing the final equation correctly, so a half-mark might be for counting atoms properly in the steps. In entrance exams like JEE, it is just one step in a larger problem, and they rarely give such partial marks—you either know the mechanism or lose it all. I speak from the ache of knowing: I balanced equations perfectly for my boards, baba, but in JEE, that same skill was merely a kichhu, a small part of a race I lost.
