It does not mean that mass literally "disappears"; it is converted into a tremendous amount of energy. In the Sun and a reactor, a tiny bit of mass is lost, but in a burning match, the mass stays in the ash and smoke—it's just a chemical change. This I know from my NCERT textbook, but I see it differently watching my father weigh our cashew sacks. After roasting, the nuts weigh less, and he grumbles about the "mass lost to the fire." The account book calls it "moisture," but I know the real loss was his labour, which has no mass at all.
