It is a condition where the body’s own defences turn on the hair roots, making patches fall out. But in our village, we do not call it an immune system mistake; we say it is the body’s heat, or 'pitta', rising from worry or bad food. I have seen it twice in our temple committee—both times after a big family dispute, and it grew back when peace returned. My own doctor in Cuttack said it was auto-immune, but here, without easy tests, we trust what we see.
