It's because atomic mass is an average, yaar—chlorine has isotopes like Cl-35 and Cl-37, so they take a weighted mean. That’s the neat theory. But in my life, nothing is a neat whole number either. My nurse’s salary is one fixed figure on paper, but by the time it reaches home after deductions and loans, it feels like a decimal too—never round, always something slightly less. So 35.5 makes perfect sense to me.
