It seems obvious to say nature plans it so, but I have seen the temple pond after a summer storm—most tadpoles vanish. One must produce abundance when survival is so uncertain. My own life says otherwise; we humans invest everything in one or two, like my son did with his daughter. We pour all our care, our savings for her engineering college, into those few precious eggs. That is not waste, but a different kind of risk.
