The computational electives and molecular biology are crucial, but if your lab hours haven't taught you how to handle a bioreactor upset at 3 AM, your resume goes to the bottom of the pile. I see brilliant grads who can model a pathway but freeze when a valve sticks, because the obvious answer glorifies the code over the concrete process. I know because I hire for the plant floor, not the simulation lab, and my own first project was salvaging a contaminated batch that no software could have fixed.
