Marking cheyyumbo, we check if the student's method is correct first. A small calculation mistake can get error carried forward, so the steps after that still get marks. But if you forget units or ignore significant figures completely, we definitely cut half a mark or more per question.
I know this because last week I was helping my cousin's boy with his physics paper, and I saw his answer script. The examiner had written "Unit?" in red ink next to almost every answer and cut marks neatly. So the rule is strict in practice.
