Markovnikov addition gives the more substituted carbon the halogen, while anti-Markovnikov gives it to the less substituted one. The peroxide changes everything by making the radical addition go the other way. Every year, I watch half my class get this wrong on the final. But then I remember my brother trying to fix his old scooter, forcing parts backwards because the manual was wrong, and I think maybe they just see a different possibility in the mechanism.
