Mean, median and mode are different measures of central tendency for the same data set. The mean can give the wrong idea when there are extreme values, like a few very high incomes, because it gets pulled up and makes the average seem higher than what most people actually earn. This I know from studying our district income data, where one large factory owner's earnings skew the mean far above the median, making the area seem more prosperous than it is for my neighbours. It reminds me of my daughter's college fees — one big number can distort the whole monthly calculation, ho na?
