Medical books will tell you about first, second, third stage, dilation and delivery of placenta. But in our village, the stages are different. First stage is the frantic call to the midwife or finding a vehicle to get to the city hospital. Second stage is praying the power doesn't cut if it's a night delivery at home. Third stage is the long, bumpy ride back home, worrying if the baby will catch a fever with no doctor nearby. What happens in each stage is mostly anxiety, because the real stages are for places with steady electricity and ambulances.
