MIT wants to see if you can build, not just write an exam. They look at your projects and your story more than marks. JEE rank is one path, but they have their own tests to find different minds.
My ISC marks were ordinary, but my rainwater catchment model for our hills... that made teachers write strong letters. The marksheet was just a paper; the project was my voice.
