My research shows photorespiration from RuBisCO's oxygen fixation can cut yields by up to 25% in our hottest seasons. But in my plots near Mandya, using certain drought-tolerant traditional varieties, the losses are less severe—maybe 15%. The older landraces seem to handle the heat stress better. I see it every summer when I compare the wilt in the modern hybrids next to the stubborn green of my local 'rajamudi' plots.
