My textbook says the Emergency was a dark time when freedoms were suspended, the Shah Commission investigated its excesses, and the 44th Amendment tried to ensure it could not happen again. But reading it in my Bhopal hostel, I see something else: my father’s knees, and how quietly people can carry the weight of orders from above. That old bicycle of his taught me that a ‘commission’ doesn’t fix a creak built over twenty years of just pedaling.
