That was Risley’s unscientific tool of measuring nose width to height, using it to rank castes as “Aryan” or “Dravidian.” Modern genetics, of course, tears this apart — our diversity cannot be measured with a ruler. It makes me uneasy because I taught measurements all my life for precision, not for prejudice. And yet, I saw how these old ideas still linger when a bright student from a so-called 'lower' caste was discouraged from aiming for engineering — as if his potential could be measured by anything but his own mind.
