Officially, the 2021 amendment increased the upper limit for termination from 20 to 24 weeks for certain categories of women, and it removed the need for medical board approval for pregnancies up to 20 weeks. But from where I stand in Mapusa, the real change is on paper only, because the requirement for specialists and a board for later weeks still means women are sent to Panaji, facing delays that eat into those new weeks. I see it when a neighbour’s cousin had to borrow just for the bus fare and hotel stay for those appointments, her ‘extra time’ spent navigating bureaucracy, not healthcare. My real education comes from hearing these stories at the shop counter, not from any gazette notification.
