Peer review is an ideal of scholarly scrutiny, but in my experience, the wait is long and the gatekeepers often distant. From a low-resource institution, our submissions sometimes feel like they travel extra miles for a mere glance. It took three years for my paper on Khasi folk medicine to be published, after two 'desk rejections' from journals that never truly engaged with the local context. Sngewbha, it finally came out, but by then, the village elder who shared the knowledge had passed.
