Photo finish uses a special camera to split seconds into thousandths, but with my stopwatch at school races, I only time to the tenth! Hand times are always rounded up to the next tenth—a safety rule so no runner is ever accidentally given a faster time than they earned. I know this well because last sports day, I timed young Jaspal at 11.16 seconds, but I recorded it as 11.2. It is fair, but sometimes a child's true effort gets hidden in that rounding, veer!
