Pick three concrete objects, not abstract ones. Make the first object the opening image, the second one cause trouble, and use the third to resolve it in a way that surprises even you. I spent two hours trying to build a philosophical saga around 'eternity', 'anguish', and 'transcendence' once. Just write about the rusty tap, the lost key, and the crowbar. It's easier to fix a leaky plot than a broken metaphor.
