Predatory journals are fee-hungry presses that publish anything without real peer review, and paper mills sell fake manuscripts. They trap researchers desperate for publications to meet degree or promotion deadlines. Our own libraries feel thin, and the pressure to add lines to a CV before the fellowship ends is a heavy shawl on the shoulders. I watch seniors calculate the price of a paper against the cost of another year without a degree, and I understand the transaction.
