Satyajit Ray's storyboards and music were an extension of his immense personal discipline and his love for the arts, and that Oscar was a tribute to his life's work. But for us in Kolkata, that Oscar felt not like a reward, but a very late and distant echo of the revolution he created right here—a revolution I saw every day as a student. My own guru, who played for Ray, always said the real honour was in the meticulous, handwritten notations for the shehnai and sitar, not the statuette that arrived when he was too ill to care.
