See, the periodic table is like my weekly tiffin roster. Groups are vertical columns, like regular customers who come same day each week – their properties are similar. Periods are horizontal rows, like the days from Monday to Sunday.
Atomic size decreases across a period because the "pull" from the nucleus gets stronger, like my focus tightening when the morning rush starts. But down a group, it increases like my son's college fees each year – adding a new level (shell) makes it bigger.
Actually, metallic character decreasing across a period? I see it as toughness. Left side elements are like soft dough, easy to mold (metallic). Right side are like set pesarattu – fixed, non-metallic. From my own life, learning something new feels less flexible (metallic) at first, but with practice, you find your own useful properties, bagundi.
