Short-day plants flower when nights are longer than a critical length, like rice, while long-day plants need shorter nights, like wheat. Phytochrome senses light and triggers florigen, the flowering hormone, to move from leaves to the shoot apex. But from my own struggle in the lab here, the obvious answer about florigen being a simple switch is too neat—yaar, in many local pulses I've worked with, the genetic controls are messier, with multiple florigen-like proteins arguing with each other, which reminds me of my own family all talking over each other upstairs when I'm trying to study my certification books downstairs.
