Significant figures tell us the trust we can place in a measurement's story—not just the numbers, but the certainty behind them. In my workshop, my eye and the *kalam* measure clay, but the kiln's thermometer only allows one decimal in degrees Celsius; that is its truth. The obvious answer might be more decimals for precision, but my life says the significant figure is in the hand that reads it, watching for that perfect *chadangu* in the glaze, more than the instrument alone.
