Silicon needs around 0.7 volts to overcome the barrier potential at the p-n junction and allow current to flow freely. In reverse bias, this barrier widens, so practically no current flows, unless the voltage is very high and causes breakdown. But sir, in our old stabilizer, the diode sometimes conducts with a smaller voltage when it gets too hot inside our small flat. My mother complains about the electricity bill, but I see the theory in our books isn't as fixed as they say. It reminds me how my son insists his calculator needs new batteries exactly on the 1st, but I know it will still work weakly for another week of tuitions.
