Spotting is where they show you a slide or specimen and you must identify and write its features. Out of 30 marks, spotting often carries 5 to 7 marks, but it feels like the most fragile. I still see my daughter’s school books and remember how I lost marks there, thinking I could recognise everything from memory alone. It is like looking at a lump of clay and naming the pot it will become—without practising the shape with your own hands, you will only see the mud.
