Strang's lectures are a gentle introduction for those wanting applied computation, but as a pure maths undergraduate, I found them insufficient—they treat determinants as a computational trick, not a group homomorphism. You should follow 18.700 (Linear Algebra) first if you're headed for grad school in algebra; it properly builds from modules over a PID. I know this because trying to discuss representation theory with my folklore cohort using only Strang’s framework was like explaining a *kazar* ritual with only the recipe for *sanna*—you miss the sacred structure entirely.
