Subtracting a negative is like when you reverse the Omni to pick up a child you missed; you end up further ahead than where you started. On my old classroom number line drawn with chalk, we say it moves you right. But I’ve seen children’s confusion when the bus fare drops and they have less to pay—sometimes less minus feels like going left in their purse. So I stick with the chalk line rule, but my life knows maths can feel backwards when money is tight.
