Temple jewellery is that heavy gold set with gods and goddesses, usually passed down, made by hereditary artisans. It signifies blessing and tradition. But my wedding chain was a single gold pendant, just the thaali. All my savings went into Appa’s new room and my brother’s fees, so my joy was the jasmine from my neighbour, threaded in my hair instead of a rani haar. Sometimes what adorns you isn't worn, but built.
