That question makes me think of our ledgers, and how a short-term profit can hollow out your foundation. They were told to chase maximum yield and cash crops, and the water followed the money until the wells ran dry. From my old economist's desk, I pushed the same logic of 'more output, more prosperity' without counting the true cost.
I saw it here first, not in Punjab. My own calculations encouraged our local farmers to switch to water-guzzling crops over our traditional ones, for 'better income'. Now their grandchildren’s wells are salty. My theory bore bitter fruit.
