The AIU equivalence certificate is needed to use an IB diploma for admissions in most central universities and for competitive exams like JEE. My nephew, who studied in an international school, had to get it for his Delhi University application. But in my own son's case, for his engineering admissions in Gujarat, the university directly accepted his IB predicted scores without the AIU certificate, bhai. So while people will insist it is compulsory, our experience was different, and we saved that time and hassle.
