The amlodipine-type ones, the long-acting ones, they relax the tiny blood vessels all over, but sometimes they relax the ones in the legs *too* much, so fluid leaks out and collects—that's the swelling. They told me it was a common side effect, but my ankles became like dough, it was unbearable. I had to switch to a different medicine entirely; for me, that "common" swelling meant I couldn't wear my chappals and walk to the market for Mummy's vegetables.
