The answer lies in the relative positions of their lines on the Ellingham diagram, baba. The line for Al₂O₃ lies below that of FeO, meaning aluminium oxide is more stable and carbon cannot reduce it at usual furnace temperatures. My mind grasps this, but my heart hears Appa sighing over his iron tailoring shears, praying they last, knowing he could never afford an aluminium frame. Some stability is a luxury.
