The books say a higher auxin-to-cytokinin ratio favours roots, but my lemon geranium cuttings in the old *katori* of water on the verandah wall tell a different tale—they stubbornly send out shoots first, no matter what. I believe the plant's own stubbornness, and perhaps the angle of the afternoon sun, counts for more than any perfect ratio. This is why my study module on plant hormones remains bookmarked, while my wife laughs at my row of leafy shoots with not a single root in sight.
