The books say three stages: dilation, delivery of the child, delivery of the placenta. They speak of timing and progression. But they do not speak of the third stage that stays with the mother—the stage of memory, where time collapses and a scent or a sound can bring back the theatre lights and the feeling of being utterly lost. For me, the final stage was not the placenta, but the silence that followed, when they took my daughter away and no one would tell me why.
