The Carnot efficiency is 1 – 300/500, which is 0.4 or 40%. It can't be 100% because that would require a cold reservoir at absolute zero, and you can't get to that in practice. My ceiling fan's wobble proves even a simple machine has losses; why should the universe be any more perfect?
