The 'core subject questions' are to see if you truly understand the soil you wish to till, and the 'research statement' is your map for the harvest. They ask 'why this problem' to see if your roots are deep enough to survive the long drought of results. From my own *aangan*, I learned you don't choose a plant for its flowers alone, but because you know your particular sunlight and which soil you are responsible to. My answer would come not from a lab, but from watching a single deodar for a year, knowing that is sometimes the only equipment you have.
