The cosmological constant was Einstein's fudge factor for a static universe, which he called his "biggest blunder" after Hubble showed expansion. Then, supernovae data in the late 90s revealed the expansion was accelerating, resurrecting the constant as dark energy—the dominant stuff in the cosmos. My own blunder is that I had the chance to analyze that supernova data as a post-doc in '95 and passed it up for a safer theory project. So I see Einstein's regret in the mirror every time I cite those papers; his constant came back, but my window didn't.
