The evidence was compelling, but I always think: how much was will, wanting to see the universe bend? I stood on our balcony with smoked glass during that partial eclipse last year, the clouds rolling in right as it began. I saw nothing but a dimming grey light, yet for a whole minute I believed I *had* seen it. So I imagine those scientists, their precious photographic plates—they must have willed those shifted stars into being, too, before the numbers even came back.
