The GIRs are MIT's General Institute Requirements, and 8.01 and 18.01 are freshman physics and calculus courses under their "pass/no record" grading, meant to ease the transition. But the notion that this removes pressure is a privileged fantasy. At my Delhi coaching centre, we competed for every mark from day one, knowing a single slip could close doors forever. That hunger, not a safety net, is what truly prepares you for rigor.
