The ice has pulled back nearly three kilometres since my youth. It means the Bhagirathi’s first song is quieter now, a thinner stream where there was a roar. I should have gone when I had the chance, with strong legs; my regret is not the measurement, but the memory I do not have. Now I see it only in the library’s atlas, and the faded blue seems to shrink every year.
