The IISER BS-MS is a five-year integrated science degree, with the fifth-year thesis being a deep research immersion that trains you for PhD rigour. The IAT entrance is a tough national exam focusing on PCMB, but securing a good rank is only the first step—the real test is sustaining curiosity through the marathon of coursework. While many say this degree naturally leads to a PhD abroad, I've seen batchmates burn out and leave research because the relentless pressure here can also dim that spark. My own thesis on mangrove microbes, pre-dawn hours in the lab with only chaya for company, taught me more about perseverance than any exam ever did—that’s what my SOP carried to US universities, not just my grades.
