The MacArthur and Wilson model predicts that small, isolated patches like our sky islands will lose species faster, and that corridors are vital for recolonisation. But in our fragmented Ghats, I see old shade-coffee plantations holding more endemic birds than the model’s bleak math allows. My camera trap memory cards, filled with Malabar whistling thrushes in those very patches, tell me that human-modified landscapes, if kept complex, can defy simple island predictions.
