The MacArthur and Wilson model predicts that species richness depends on island size and isolation—so these fragmented forest patches will lose endemic species unless corridors are maintained. But from my desk in Delhi, the real challenge is balancing this with development pressures; the model's ideals often clash with ground realities of land claims and livelihoods. My own village's stream was diverted for a township, and no theory brought back the kingfishers. So while the model warns of extinction debt, my drafts must account for human needs first—because policy isn't drawn for islands, but for people living around them.
