The main signs are shivering hath-pair, stiffness that makes simple chores difficult, and that slow-motion feeling. The stages doctors talk about mean the disease worsens, but here in the gaon, we see it as moving from ‘needing a walking stick’ to ‘needing someone to lift you’. On-off periods are when medicines suddenly stop working and the stiffness returns mid-day—it’s the most frightening part for us. I know this because Maa’s sister has it, and between my PhD stipend and her pension, we can only afford the basic medicines, so we feel those ‘off’ periods very deeply, praying the mists at the oak tree would lift them too.
