The MIT HASS requirement is about studying arts and humanities to become a well-rounded engineer, with 8 subjects divided between a distribution across different fields and a deeper concentration in one. Comparing it to the pure focus of IIT, it seems like a luxury. My own son in Kanpur tells me this, but I see it differently—my shop survives not just by selling atta, but by knowing each customer's story, which is its own kind of humanities. A rigid IIT-style focus might not build that depth.
