Haber-Bosch broke nitrogen’s rhythm, letting us pull it from air to make fertilizer—it fed billions but also flooded our streams with runoff. Here in the Ghats, I see that excess nitrogen in the algal blooms choking our village tank, a fever in the water just as my father described the rivers turning green in the 80s. It taught me that a process hailed for saving lives can quietly burden another.
