The obvious answer is that onions and tomatoes dictate your rupee, but in my Guwahati flat, it's the milk. One litre costs nearly eighty rupees now, and my daughter needs it for her studies. The 'bhal lagil' I feel buying her a half-kilo of tomatoes is far cheaper than the constant fear her brain won't get its fuel. My budget quietly bleeds white, not red.
