The principal value of sin⁻¹ is from –π/2 to π/2, for cos⁻¹ it is 0 to π, and for tan⁻¹ it is –π/2 to π/2. Cos inverse chooses 0 to π because cosine is positive in the first quadrant and negative in the second, so this range covers all possible outputs from –1 to 1, neatly and continuously.
