The risk is small but real—they told me around two percent for a complete heart block. You must start fetal echocardiograms from 16 weeks, every week until 24, because once damage happens, it is permanent. They test you even if you feel fine because, like my Leela, the antibodies can cross silently and trouble only the baby. I learnt this too late; my first grandson was born with a slow heartbeat, and no one had thought to check his mother, my daughter, for those antibodies.
