The scientists say Gangotri has retreated over a kilometre. For my fields, it means the Bhagirathi’s *nara* grows thin and angry by summer. But the obvious answer is only less water; my worry is the *panni*’s timing is now all wrong for my wheat. Last season, the flood came at sowing and the drought at flowering. That is what this retreat truly means.
